Who We Are

The Lewes Presbyterian Church has been a congregation since 1692 and has worshipped at its current location since 1717.  It was founded by Scots-Irish settlers who came to America seeking the freedom to worship and serve God as dictated by their faith. For over 325 years our congregation has maintained an unbroken witness to the love of God in Jesus Christ. (For more about our history click here.)

Our vision is Believing, growing and sharing the love of Christ, and our mission is to worship God in spirit and in truth, to make disciples as we study and grow in faith and faithfulness.  We hope to enjoy good fellowship, to help each other in time of need and to reach our world with the good news of Jesus Christ by word and deed. We believe that all Christians are called and gifted in various ways for ministry, and we welcome you to join our community of faith as the Holy Spirit guides us on our journey together.

What We Believe

We stand in the heritage of the Reformed tradition, and look to the Holy Scriptures as our primary and final authority in matters of faith and practice. The Lewes Presbyterian Church is a member congregation of ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians (ECO) and of the ECO Heritage Presbytery. The Church subscribes to the ECO Essential Tenets, and is governed by the ECO Polity and Rules of Discipline.

Distinctives of the Lewes Presbyterian Church

and the ECO Denomination

  1. We are evangelical.   We take the Bible very seriously and believe that faith in Jesus Christ is central to Christianity.  The Great Commission, which is to make disciples of all nations, guides our mission in the world.

  2. We believe that Jesus is Lord and Savior and is the only way to know God and be saved.  There is no other way.

  3. As Presbyterians, we are elder led and accountable to our fellow Presbyterians in our denomination.  We are connected by our covenant with one another.

  4. We are confessional.  The Bible is supreme, but it is informed by our denomination’s Book of Confessions and Essential Tenets.

  5. We have two sacraments: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

  6. We baptize both infants and adults, usually by sprinkling with the waters of Baptism.

  7. We are egalitarian.  Both men and women serve in leadership roles as pastors, elders, and deacons.

  8. We are pro-life and hold life to be sacred from conception until natural death.

  9. We hold to a Biblical view of marriage and family which is to say that physical intimacy should only take place between a man and a woman in the covenant of marriage.
